Hurricane Irma Preparedness

As Hurricane Irma churns in the Atlantic, the Florida panhandle and the southern states are preparing for an unprecedented weather event. If you are in the path of a hurricane, take steps to prepare now. Here are a few select items you won’t want to forget:

  1. Water – The rule of thumb is that you want to have at least one gallon of water, per person, per day for at least three days. Anything less than this puts you in danger of running out at the worst possible time.
  2. First Aid Supplies That Aren’t Already in Your Kit – Make sure you have enough bandages, but there are other important items. Sterile dressing, gauze pads, antiseptic wipes and antibacterial ointment are also crucial in the event of an injury during the storm.
  3. Ready-to-Eat Canned Meats, Fruits and Vegetables – and a can opener to open them!
  4. High-Energy Foods – Protein bars, nuts and other non-perishable foods that will provide you with plenty of energy in case you need to go a long time without a meal.
  5. Non-Prescription and Prescription Drugs – Pain relievers, antacids, laxatives and anti-diarrhea medications.
  6. Toilet Paper – and other hygienic supplies
  7. Battery-Operated Radio, a Flashlight and Batteries – you cannot rely on your cell phone as cell phone towers may be damaged by the storm
  8. Cash – credit card machines will not work if there is no power
  9. Map of the Area – especially if you are in an unfamiliar location
  10. Comfort Foods (or Drinks), Books, Board Games and children’s toys – you may need to shelter in place for a while
